ACA (Accessible Canada Act)

The Accessible Canada Act aims for a barrier-free Canada by 2040 and requires federally regulated organisations to plan for and remove accessibility barriers, including digital ones.

What it is

The ACA (2019) is Canada's federal accessibility law. It requires covered organisations to publish accessibility plans, set up feedback processes, and report on progress — with information and communication technology as one of the priority areas.

Who it covers

Federally regulated entities: the Government of Canada, Crown corporations, and federally regulated sectors such as banking, telecommunications and transportation.

What it requires

Accessibility plans, feedback mechanisms and progress reports; for digital content, WCAG-based conformance is the practical benchmark.

Key dates

Phased since 2019, with ongoing planning and reporting obligations.

What non-compliance costs

The Accessibility Commissioner can issue compliance orders and monetary penalties.
