RPwD Act and Digital Accessibility Compliance
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 is part of India's accessibility framework. Digital accessibility planning should consider the Act, applicable rules and standards, and any sector-specific directions relevant to the organization.
Start with the official text and your sector
Consult the RPwD Act on India Code and the W3C directory of Indian accessibility policies. The directory is a starting reference; check the responsible authority for amendments and current requirements.
For a SEBI-regulated entity, continue to the SEBI digital accessibility circulars. An assessment should identify both the applicable obligations and the precise technical standard used for testing.
A practical digital accessibility work plan
- List the websites, apps, documents and customer journeys for which your organization is responsible.
- Identify the people who maintain each platform and any third-party components.
- Agree a technical assessment scope, including manual checks and assistive technology testing.
- Prioritize barriers that prevent people from completing essential tasks, and record remediation ownership.
- Retest changes and maintain a way for people to report accessibility problems.
Keep technical conformance and legal obligations clear
An audit report describes a defined assessment and its findings. Record the product version, test date, scope and unresolved issues so that others can understand what was evaluated. A report should not imply that untested pages, new releases or all legal obligations have been covered.
