IS 17802 (Indian ICT Accessibility Standard)

IS 17802 is India's official standard for accessible ICT products and services, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards and aligned with WCAG and EN 301 549.

What it is

IS 17802 gives India its own technical benchmark for digital accessibility, closely mirroring the international WCAG and European EN 301 549 requirements. It is referenced alongside the RPwD Act and the government's GIGW guidelines as the measure of an accessible Indian website or app.

Who it covers

Government departments, and increasingly regulated private entities — including SEBI- and RBI-regulated financial institutions expected to meet accessibility mandates.

What it requires

Conformance with its ICT accessibility clauses, which for web content map closely to WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

Key dates

Applied through the RPwD Act and sector circulars rather than a single national deadline.

What non-compliance costs

Enforcement flows through the RPwD Act and regulator circulars (for example SEBI and RBI), which carry their own compliance consequences.
