Skip link

Also known as: Skip to main content, bypass block

A skip link is a hidden link at the very top of a page that lets keyboard users jump past the menu straight to the main content.

In plain terms

Every page usually starts with the same logo, search and navigation. Without a skip link, a keyboard user has to Tab through all of it on every single page before reaching what they came for. A skip link — normally invisible until you Tab to it — takes them straight to the content.

Why it matters

It's the simplest way to satisfy WCAG 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks) and a big quality-of-life improvement for keyboard and screen-reader users. It takes about ten minutes to add.

Example

The first focusable element is a "Skip to main content" link that appears when you press Tab and jumps focus to <main>.
