Conformance level

Also known as: Level A, AA, AAA

Conformance levels are WCAG's three tiers — A, AA and AAA. Level AA is the one almost every law and contract requires.

In plain terms

Level A is the bare minimum, AA is the practical target for a usable site, and AAA is the strictest (and often not achievable for a whole site). When someone says "we need to be WCAG compliant", they nearly always mean Level AA of WCAG 2.2.

Why it matters

Knowing the target level tells you exactly which checkpoints you must pass. Aiming for AA means meeting all Level A and all Level AA criteria — the set behind the ADA, EAA, Section 508 and India's RPwD Act.

Example

A contract that says "must meet WCAG 2.1 AA" is asking you to pass every A and AA criterion in that version — around 50 checkpoints.
