Descriptive link text

Also known as: Meaningful links

Descriptive link text is wording that makes clear where a link goes on its own — so "Download the 2025 audit report" instead of "click here".

In plain terms

Screen-reader users often pull up a list of all the links on a page to navigate. A list full of "click here" and "read more" tells them nothing. Link text that describes its destination works out of context — for everyone scanning the page, and for search engines too.

Why it matters

Vague links fail WCAG 2.4.4 and frustrate users who navigate by links. Clear link text is a quick win that also improves SEO.

Example

Replace "To see our services, click here" with "See our accessibility audit services".
