Plain language

Also known as: Plain writing

Plain language means writing so your reader understands it the first time — short sentences, everyday words, and no unnecessary jargon.

In plain terms

It isn't "dumbing down" — it's respecting the reader's time. You lead with the point, use common words over fancy ones, keep sentences short, and explain any term you can't avoid. It helps people with cognitive disabilities, non-native speakers, and honestly everyone who's busy.

Why it matters

Clear writing is part of WCAG (3.1) and a huge, cheap accessibility win. It also happens to be exactly what search engines and AI answer engines reward — clear, direct content gets quoted.

Example

Replacing "Utilise the aforementioned functionality" with "Use this feature" helps every reader and loses nothing.
