EN 301 549

Also known as: European accessibility standard

EN 301 549 is Europe's technical accessibility standard. It builds on WCAG and is the yardstick used to check compliance with the European Accessibility Act.

In plain terms

Where the European Accessibility Act (EAA) is the law, EN 301 549 is the detailed checklist that says what "accessible" actually means for websites, apps, documents and hardware. Its web and app requirements are based on WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

Why it matters

Any business selling into the EU under the EAA is measured against EN 301 549. Meeting WCAG 2.1 AA gets you most of the way; the standard adds extra items for things like hardware and support services.

Example

An online store serving EU customers demonstrates EAA compliance by meeting EN 301 549, which for its website means WCAG 2.1 AA.
