Error identification

Also known as: Form validation, error messages

Error identification means clearly telling users which form field went wrong and why — in text, not just with a red border.

In plain terms

When a form fails, everyone needs to know what to fix. A red outline alone doesn't help someone who can't see colour or is using a screen reader. Good error handling names the field, explains the problem in words, and suggests how to fix it — and announces it to assistive tech.

Why it matters

Vague or colour-only errors leave users stuck and abandoning forms. WCAG 3.3.1 and 3.3.3 require errors to be identified in text and, where possible, come with a suggested fix.

Example

Instead of just turning the email box red, show "Enter a valid email address, like [email protected]" next to the field and announce it.
