WCAG 1.1.1 Level A Perceivable

1.1.1 Non-text Content

All non-text content (images, icons, charts, buttons) has a text alternative that conveys its purpose.

What 1.1.1 Non-text Content means

Screen-reader users get the same information from an image or icon that sighted users get visually. Decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.

How to test

Check every <img> has a meaningful alt attribute; decorative images use alt=""; icon buttons have accessible names; charts have text summaries.

How to meet it

Write concise, descriptive alt text; use alt="" for purely decorative images; give icon-only controls an aria-label; provide data tables or summaries for complex graphics.
